Without a complete front row and 3 backs in the forwards, Keyworth were always going to struggle against a well drilled Nottingham Boots Corsairs.

It was uncontested scrums from the first whistle and boy, were there a lot of whistles?! With a number of late withdrawls and two players drafted into the first XV, Keyworth just managed to scrape 15 players together to make the short trip to Lady Bay on a gloriously sunny Saturday.
Enough of the excuses, NBC were more than good value for their win and dominated most phases of play, even though it was difficult to string those phases of play together for both sides. With only 5 minutes on the clock, NBC raced into a 7 point lead when their outside half crossed from close range and 10 minutes later it was almost déjà vu as their strong centre did the same.
Keyworth rallied and kept NBC at bay before young centre Tom Muncey intercepted a home team backs move on his own 10m line and raced away to score and bring the visitors to within 7 points at the half. It was a great galloping run and although hounded all the way to the line, Tom dug deep and the line eventually arrived.
After the break, with Keyworth gaining some self-belief, it was almost role reversal as NBC turned the visitors over in midfield before putting their elusive winger away for a great solo effort and stretch their lead on 55 minutes. Pleasingly, Keyworth heads didn’t go down and they redoubled their efforts, spurred on by evergreen scrum-half, Dave Tich Shields. Within 5 minutes they’d pulled back another try through outside half and captain for the day, Mark King, who added to his impressive points tally for the season as he crashed over from a 5m scrum after Sam Tilaks was unlucky not to have scored when he was held up over the line.
Unfortunately, from that point on it was one way traffic as the home side took control and Keyworth were reduced to 14 men when a yellow card was shown. NBC ran in two further tries to finish worthy winners at 27 – 10, but Keyworth were left thinking of what might have been.
Young Ryan White made his debut in senior rugby and played out of position in the pack. Two others, Sam Tilaks and Liam Harrison were playing only their second senior games and the team had 8 players under the age of 22, which is very encouraging for the future. Alex Tsang and Gareth Smith also played out of position, the former played most of the second half with a broken hand and still managed to make 9 tackles during the match.
Adam Waldron had an improved game but still needs to be even busier in the loose. Phil Dennett drove well from the base of the scrum and it was good to see him restored to the back row. James Maddock didn’t make a huge number of tackles but the ones he did were absolutely thumping ones, driving his opponent backwards on each occasion.
JP Disney, in his last game before succumbing to the lure of the decorating table, covered well at the back but on too many occasions just had too many players running at him. Mark Scott, as always, got stuck into the rucks and mauls and was a forceful driver in this area.
So Keyworth suffered their third consecutive defeat and need to find their winning ways once more as they travel to Ripley Rhinos this coming Saturday.
