Keyworth start the New Year with Victory against Nottingham Corsairs

Keyworth got the game off to flyer with a dominant start by the home pack. Within 5 minutes of the start the forwards showed their strength moving the ball slickly down field, only for the opposition to illegally spoil the ball in the ruck resulting in a penalty in front of the posts. Simon Richards stepped up and made no mistake to make it 3-0.
Soon after the restart Keyworths forwards and backs linked across the park and moved the ball again into Corsairs 22. More power moves by the forwards again saw them cross the line only for the ball to be held up by some clever defending from Corsairs. However from the resulting scrum the pack pushed hard and scored a well deserved push over try by No8 Richard Johnson under the posts. Richards again with the kick to make it 10-0 after 10 minutes.
With Corsairs still on the back foot it wasn’t long before Keyworth scored again. Again playing 1-15 rugby they found themselves camped on the opposition try line. Eventually the ball was popped out to inside centre Steve Hart to crash over from 5 metres. Richards added the extra points to make it 17-0.
To their credit despite the initial Keyworth onslaught the Corsairs youngsters continued to play with spirit but made little in roads through our defence. After 27 minutes Keyworth again found themselves just outside the Corsairs 22 with a scrum on the left side of the pitch. A miss move was called by the backs, however the pass went low and with Full Back Stuart Clark having to take the ball off his toes the initial impetuous was lost however some quick thinking by Richards (needed to make it up from his crap pass) saw him loop round to take a cheeky flick from Clark which opened the space for winger Tom Muncey to score in the corner. Richards missing the conversion to make it 22-0 and this is how it stayed until half time.
The second half was a different story. Not sure what the Corsairs coach had put in the half time water but it was them who dominated good periods of the second half. Keyworth tried in vain on several occasions to get the 4th try to add the bonus point but the Corsairs defence stood solid and it was them that started to take more control of the ball, with several clever moves and runs putting Keyworth deep into their own half for long periods. Silly penalties started to be given away one of which resulted in Corasairs 1st 3 points taking the score to 22-3.
From the kick off Corsairs again went on the attack and moved steadily down the field only for another penalty to be given away and 2nd row Kev Parker to be sent to the naughty boy step for 10 minutes for killing the ball.
With Parker off and both Hart and Scrum Half Owen Phillips having left the pitch through injury several changes had to be made. From a Corsairs scrum mid way through the 2nd half the numerical advantage helped and with an open the blind side which they exploited well to score a try by the Fly half. He missed the kick to make the score 22-8.
Keyworth gave themselves a kick up the backside and went on the attack again shortly after resulting in a penalty to be given away by Corsairs in front of the posts 15 metres out. Richards stepped to make the kick and take the score to 25-8.
The game closed with Keyworth again on the offensive seeking the bonus try but to no avail and eventually the final whistle went to end the game.
A special mention must go to the young Corsairs side who never gave up throughout, especially the pack led by THE TANK who spent great periods of the game going backwards.
